A Series I Loved, Overstretched: Thoughts on The Primal of Blood and Bone

The Primal of Blood and Bone by Jennifer L. Armentrout continues the From Blood and Ash saga (Book #6) as Poppy and Casteel face the fallout of divine revelations, shifting alliances, and an escalating war between gods, Primals, and mortals. As ancient powers awaken and long-teased truths are brought to the surface, the story pushes towards what was positioned as an endgame, while widening the scope of the conflict and setting up future events beyond this instalment.

My Thoughts on The Primal of Blood and Bone

I’m relieved to be done with this one.

This series has taken a disappointing turn. The book felt like 50% filler, packed with repetition and unnecessary inner monologues. What was meant to be the final instalment instead reveals that not only is there another book coming, but an additional novella as well. I’m genuinely unsure whether I can continue. The remaining story could easily have fit into this volume if the repetitive and superfluous content had been cut.

Halfway through, I abandoned my Kindle and switched to Audible so I could at least work while listening. I simply couldn’t enjoy reading it the way I had the earlier books in the series. The pacing felt glacial, the plot nonexistent, and the experience painful. My frustration was such that I won’t be writing a full review.

This was a textbook example of the sunk cost fallacy. I’ve invested so much time in this series that I felt compelled to finish, but now I’m genuinely questioning whether I’ll continue.

Verdict: 2.5/5
